Top Floor Home Cinema – Cobham

When our client first approached us, they had a clear but simple brief: transform an unused second-floor gym into a comfortable cinema room with great sound and picture quality. What began as a basic idea quickly evolved into a fully customised cinema space, carefully designed and built to deliver both performance and comfort, while blending seamlessly into the home.

This project became less about just installing equipment, and more about creating a purpose-built room that truly works as a cinema.

Building the Room from the Inside Out

A major part of this transformation was constructing new front and rear walls. These walls were designed not only to support the layout of the room, but also to improve sound performance and minimise noise transfer to the rest of the house.

Inside these walls, we installed Rockwool acoustic insulation, helping to control sound reflections within the room and reduce sound bleed into neighbouring spaces. This ensures powerful audio inside the cinema without disturbing the rest of the home — an essential requirement for any high-end residential installation.

The walls also house the in-wall speakers, allowing the room to remain clean and uncluttered while delivering immersive sound.

Acoustic Fabric Finishes

To complete the acoustic treatment, the room was finished using a fabric track system and stretched fabric panels. This approach allows acoustic materials to remain hidden while creating a smooth, high-quality finish throughout the space.

Fabric finishes not only enhance the look of the room, but also play an important role in controlling echo and reflections, helping dialogue remain clear and the overall sound balanced. The result is a space that feels refined, comfortable, and acoustically controlled without appearing overly technical.

Custom Stage Construction for Seating

To maximise viewing comfort and usability, we constructed a custom stage area approximately five metres wide and two metres deep. This raised platform creates space for a second row of seating, ensuring clear sightlines to the screen and a true cinema-style layout.

Every stage is built specifically to suit the room dimensions and client requirements, reinforcing our ability to tailor each project rather than relying on off-the-shelf solutions.

A Clean and Simple Cinema Experience

The cinema features a 4K Epson LS9000 projector paired with a 121-inch screen, delivering a bright, sharp image suitable for both films and sports. Audio is configured in a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos layout, with in-ceiling speakers adding height and immersion.

Control is handled through a Control4 remote, allowing the client to manage the cinema and lighting easily from a single interface. The goal was to keep everyday operation simple while maintaining a premium experience.
