RP22 (Recommended Practice-22) refers to a set of guidelines developed by the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) for the design and installation of Immersive Audio Systems.

These guidelines provide recommendations and best practices for the design, installation, and calibration of immersive audio setups, such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, and Auro-3D, in home theatres and entertainment spaces. The goal is to ensure that immersive audio systems deliver an exceptional and immersive sound experience for homeowners, considering factors such as speaker placement, room acoustics, equipment selection, and calibration techniques.

RP22 identifies 21 different performance parameters that can be predicted during system design, then tested and verified before system sign-off. Using these metrics, it sets criteria for four different levels of system performance:

Level 1 – conveys basic artistic intent.

Level 2 – a higher level of performance that more accurately conveys artistic intent.

Level 3 – meets or exceeds reference commercial cinema standards.

Level 4 – achieves the maximum level of performance across every parameter.

Our clients can use the performance levels defined in RP22 to define what they want from a home cinema and it provides us with a new tool to define the difference between off-the-shelf solutions and a state-of-art immersive home cinema.

How can CEDIA guidelines effect your cinema build?

  • Improved Audio Experience: RP22 Immersive Audio guidelines ensure that audio systems, including surround sound and immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, are installed and calibrated correctly for optimal performance. This results in a more immersive and realistic audio experience.

  • Enhanced Visuals: CEDIA guidelines cover aspects such as display calibration and video processing, ensuring that projectors and displays are set up to deliver accurate and high-quality visuals. This leads to sharper images, better colour accuracy, and improved overall visual performance.

  • Seamless Integration: CEDIA emphasises the importance of integrating different technology systems seamlessly. This includes AV equipment, lighting control, HVAC systems, and more. Proper integration ensures that all systems work together harmoniously, enhancing convenience and user experience.

  • Customisation for Client Needs: The guidelines provide flexibility for customising cinema designs to meet the specific needs and preferences of our clients. This could include considerations for room layout, seating arrangement, acoustics, and aesthetic preferences, resulting in personalised cinema experiences.

  • Reliability and Performance: By following the guidelines outlined by CEDIA, we as installers can ensure that technology systems are installed correctly and perform reliably over time. This minimises issues such as equipment failures, audio/video synchronization problems, and inconsistent performance, leading to greater customer satisfaction.
