TV and Essential Viewing for a Strange Spring

Last year we took a look at some of the best movies to enjoy using your home cinema for the second half of 2019. Now we all find ourselves at home with the perfect opportunity to catch up on some of the best content on TV.

This is a serious time and we must all look after ourselves and our families and at the moment the best way to do this is to stay home and help the NHS slow the spread of this devastating virus. We must all take heed of the Government’s advice and, let’s be honest; it’s not the biggest hardship.

To help you to fill some of your spare time we have put together a list of some of the most essential viewing for this spring. We’ve split it up as there are some obvious ones.

Online Video

If you are looking to keep the kids active and entertained there are loads of things on YouTube to watch as a family.

The Body Coach Joe Wicks – has been producing home PE lessons for kids to follow along with at home, they’re fun and engaging and his enthusiasm really helps kids to join in and get active in the morning. Google search to find out specific details but you can find some of his content on his YouTube Channel.

Zoo Web cams Whisk yourself away to the wild and spy on the exotic animals on display at various zoos around the country. Many have live streams on their websites so you can see what the animals get up to throughout the day. It’s amazing to see how the animals behave and can be really educational too. Marwell Zoo among others have made their streams readily available.

WhatsOnStage – have made a number of theatre productions available to watch on the small screen. So if you need your theatre fix make sure you head to their website and enjoy!

Movies on Demand

As the UK is now on lock down and families are in isolation, some of the big Hollywood studios are releasing their movies earlier than expected via on-demand platforms to make up for the lack of cinema footfall. The Radio Times have put together a list of films and how to watch them.

Wish Upon a Star

Yep, it’s here. The Disney+ subscription service has arrived and is choc-full of content to fill your days. From the classic animations to brand new content it really is a tempting subscription to bolster your existing Netflix, Sky and Prime offering. The Disney+ content can even be streamed in resolutions up to 4K Ultra HD in Dolby Vision and HDR10, with Dolby Atmos sound at no extra cost!

Some of our favourite shows on Disney+:

The Mandalorian
The platform’s breakout hit looks slick and expensive and gave birth to the worldwide obsession with ‘Baby Yoda’. Eight episodes of some of the best Star Wars action of recent times! You’ll be searching for Star Wars merchandise within minutes of episode one.
Marvel Collections
The 90s incarnations of X-Men and Ultimate Spider-Man are widely regarded as the best Marvel content ever made and set up the franchise on the path to its big screen dominance.
The Simpsons
Ever thought of watching them in order? Well now you can. With all 30 seasons available on Disney+ there’s plenty of nostalgia on which to binge.
You must have seen…

This section is for the obvious recommendations which you really should have watched or at least be on your list – remember these shows are usually hits for good reason. Don’t miss out on cultural references and inside jokes – get these done.

Game of Thrones
Eight seasons of complicated storyline, dysfunctional families, nudity, dragons and fantasy based war, what’s not to love. This show is said to have change television for ever with its huge budgets and extensive cast and staging. You have to see it to believe it, until you have “you know nothing”! (That’s an inside joke)
Killing Eve
This BBC Spy thriller focuses on the relationship between a loveable assassin and the MI5 spy trying to catch her. It’s a dark comedy with twists and turns and genuinely likeable protagonists. Series 3 arriving Spring 2020.
After Life
Ricky Gervais writes and stars in this black comedy-drama created for Netflix. After the loss of his wife to cancer, Tony struggles with the realities of depression and suicidal thoughts. It’s a typical Gervais production and takes you on an emotional roller coaster. Series 2 arriving Spring 2020.
Breaking Bad
The classic story of a chemistry teacher stumbling into the meth manufacturing industry to pay off medical bills. This show is credited as starting the “binge-watching” culture in the UK as it wasn’t initially aired here. While slightly dated (first episode 2008) the drama still holds up.
The Office
While the UK incarnation of the show could probably be consumed in a couple of evenings; the US version “The American Office” boasts nine seasons and is widely considered a more accessible show for those not comfortable with Ricky Gervais’ delightfully agonising David Brent performance.
This critically acclaimed comedy-drama from Phoebe Waller-Bridge follows the lead character as she navigates through life and love in London while she tries to cope with a recent tragedy. Ups, downs, tears and genuine laugh out loud moments.
Something a little weird
Rick and Morty
Adult cartoon from Adult Swim, follows the adventures of genius, alcoholic pensioner Rick and his reluctant grandson, Morty. The show cleverly explores the theory of the multi-verse with adult themes and questionable language. It’s an odd one but strangely enjoyable.
The Good Place
This light hearted comedy follows Eleanor, a deceased saleswoman who lived a morally corrupt life as she lands in a heaven-like afterlife. Recognising she doesn’t belong there a fun buddy comedy unfolds. This is an easy watch and will leave you feeling pretty good, also the cast is fantastic, with some great cameos throughout the four seasons.
